Barcamp Sydney 2: A Robot Took My Baby
Well the second Sydney barcamp took off with a big messy splash, jumbled with the University of Technology Sydney’s open day for IT students (where they try and convince high school students to come study there). A pretty well focused mess if you ask me. Although I did overhear a dad tell a mum that “It’s called barcamp and it’s where anyone can get up and talk about IT stuff…”
Anyway……
Lots of people. Some old faces, some new faces, some old faces with new t-shirts. Oh, yeah, and the t-shirts actually fit this time. I’m not sure what ridiculous joker ordered those tight tees last time but that was just crazy. These ones were much much better.
My bruvver and I kicked off the day with a quick chat about Facebook as a social operating system: Is it the next Microsoft, and I got a bunch of kicks to the groin from Nick Hodge for that one. Got a lot of good discussion going and we actually ended up with a micro-payment nod fest (”mmm, yeah, mmm”).
There was also Robot soccer, a Wii and some lab rat work going down. Great vibe. All about the vibe.
Great to see Nick there actually. He was one of the few big co people who came to this gritty grassroots event. Hello too to MCB (who’s hiring), Lachlan Hunt, Cam, Ajay, Ivo, Jodie, Tim, Mark, Mark P, Sri, Nick, and everyone else I can see through the Barcamp magic mirror.
Big, big thanks to the Unorganisers to stepped in when Mr Tight T-shirt (me) decided not to get this one flowing. Christy and Russ – you guys were the drivers and deserve some time off. Who’s up next?

oops! I was more having fun with the concept and sorry if I came over as a Microsoft thug come thought police.
It’s actually a way cool thought experiment about APIs, eyeballs and an indication of how the world is changing. Quickly.

*waves* – it was good to meet the man behind the monkey-face Tangler icon!

You’re a big thug Nick – that’s all you are. You don’t care about the little man. The man on the street. The man in the startup. Just trying hard to make his way in the world today.
And you’re the thought police too (if it’s ok with you for me to say that!)
End of Message.
